Brian Hall, former World Cup veteran referee and director of referee administration of CONCACAF, will discuss the key components to optimal positioning to ensure the best angle of vision to make the correct decision. He will use video and diagrams to illustrate correct positioning on the pitch.

When is Bad Behavior Breaking the Law? - Mike Doucette

Not knowing about laws is like trying to play the game of soccer without knowing the rules. It would be difficult to win the game - or even to be a good player - without knowing the rules. Knowing about laws is especially important because our society is based on the "rule of law." While all bullying is mean-spirited, many times it crosses the line to also become illegal. Much of this illegal conduct can have very seriousconsequences on the rest of a young person’s life, whether that person is the bully or the victim. In this session we will talk about what is bullying, when does it become illegal, cyber-bullying and sexting, and what are the consequences of bullying. In addition, we will talk about some ways victims can lawfully combat bullying.
What is Game Fitness Anyway? - Wendy LeBolt, PhD

Game fitness means more than who can run the fastest for the longest. We’ll look at what other kinds of training make an athlete fully fit for the game. Emphasis will be: core strength, joint stability, and injury prevention for dynamic performance. Game fitness = peak performance in the game environment. You’ll take home at least 6 activities to take straight to the field.

If you practice well and compete poorly the culprit is probably anxiety. It can happen to anyone. However, some people thrive and enjoy demanding environments, while others tend to fall apart and become nervous just thinking about playing. We call this phenomenon “choking”. In this session we will explore how people can become mentally tougher and learn the coping skills necessary to handle choking situations and bring their “A” game when they need it most.

Born Ready Project: Decision Making - Lessons Learned from the Legacy of Len Bias - Dave Ungrady

Author Dave Ungrady, former editor of VYSA Touchline, will talk about decision making as part of the Born Ready Project, which teaches life skills to youth and coaches. Ungrady developed the project from his recent book, Born Ready: The Mixed Legacy of Len Bias. The presentation defines the types of decisions and offers tips on how to make good decisions. Ungrady used the story of Bias, who was considered as good as Michael Jordan, made a fateful decision to overdose on cocaine, dying two days after the Boston Celtics made him the number 2 pick in the 1986 NBA draft.
Who’s Minding the Store: Keeping it Legal with the IRS - 501(c)3 Status - Jim Bonfils

In this session we will review and discuss the financial business concerns of teams, clubs, and leagues, including several easy-to-implement and follow rules of thumb that can protect your nonprofit from loss. We will also discuss selected reporting topics of maintaining IRS-501(c)3 status.
Referee Lecture: Referee Mentoring Program - George Vergara and Bill Dittmar

George Vergara, State Referee Administrator for the Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program, will outline the plans for a referee mentoring program in our state with the main goal of developing new referees in a way that will enable them to achieve their maximum potential through personal commitment and continuous improvement. In addition, Bill Dittmar, US Soccer National level referee and current MLS referee, will discuss leaving a legacy and will explore 900 years of mentoring advice using five Yoda quotes as they relate to the journey of the soccer referee.

Is motivation learned? When you watch some athletes play their sport, you can see...no feel their passion. These players also practice more, try harder and welcome difficult challenges. What determines whether an athlete welcomes challenges and delights in 10,000 hours of developmental training or fears change and complains at every practice? We will explore how you as a leader within the sport community can enhance the motivational climate for parents, athletes and coaches. This is where the love of the game is cultivated; and, later, peak performance and lifelong competence are harvested.

How to Implement a Club and League-Wide Policy on Concussion - Steve Bender

The Virginia General Assembly is adopting new legislation this year that will require youth sports organizations to establish a comprehensive Concussion Awareness, Education and Management Plan. By July 1 your club will need to have a policy in place. Come to this session to find out what you will need to do to comply with this new law. This presentation will include information on awareness education requirements, cognitive testing options, what to do when a player is suspected of having a concussion, and requirements for returning to play.
